DST Perplexes Me (I'm a Poet and I Don't Know It)

After an extended period of careful consideration, I have decided that I do not like this early start to daylight savings time. I like having the sunlight stretch into evening--don't get me wrong. Life just seems that much better when the sun goes down that much later.

However, I have to say it is way too dark in the mornings now. Whatever joy I find in the late sunlight is offset by the despair I feel waking up and realizing it is still dark out. In fact, one might argue it is actually worse. If we were still in standard time, I would at least wake up in the right frame of mind. And I could sleep off any grouchy feelings brought on by the early sunset. But now I wake up in a bad mood, and by the time the evening sun arrives to make me happy, almost the entire day is already in the crapper.

I'd like to see the time change pushed back about two weeks, just so we can allow the days to get a bit longer, which will greatly offset the morning darkness. I mean, wasn't "ridiculously dark March mornings" one of the official reasons why we scrapped the permanent DST experiment back in the day?

Also, I may be the only person in the world bothered by this, but I don't know why we call non-DST time "standard time" when "standard time" is only in effect for about 4 months of the year. To me "standard" suggests "this is the norm, and all others are measured as deviations from this." But how can it be the norm when it's only in use for 33% of the year? By very definition, I think the norm has to be the option that occurs the majority of the time.

So I hereby propose that we push the start of daylight savings time back two weeks, and that we change the name of daylight savings time to standard time. And standard time will now be called "daylight losing time."
