Oscar Lovin'
Ah, Oscar night. It was a tad odd for me this year, since this past yearish, and particularly this past 6 months or so, I've seen the fewest movies I've seen since...well, probably since I was too young to get into the good ones.
I've been teaching and working and moving and being in weddings and all other sorts of stuff. Really, I've even been too busy to complain about how busy I am. So I only saw two of the five BP nominees, which breaks a streak of several years. I liked both I saw--Atonement and Juno--though both had flaws. Michael Clayton and No Country for Old Men have both been on my list for quite some time. And I will definitely be seeing them eventually. I wasn't sold on There Will Be Blood immediately, because Oh My Gosh Daniel Day-Lewis Chewing Scenery and Playing an Insane Character and Oh My Gosh There's Something You Have NEVER Seen Before. But I am now more persuaded to see it. Also, I still do love Daniel Day-Lewis.
And speaking of celebrities I love, that became something of the theme for the night. I was not able to hold forth on all the random movies I loved, since I haven't seen very many of them. So, instead, I had to hold forth on celebrities who I love even though I shouldn't love them because (a) I don't actually know them, and (b) they seem to have one or more serious flaws.
For example: The Rock, or whatever nom de naissance he's going by these days. He's a fricking professional wrestler, for the love. And yet, I love him. No, scratch that. Actually, I just love to look at him. Because...hello!!
I also love Ryan Seacrest, despite all that he represents. I love him because he knows exactly what he represents, and he embraces the madness. And that is all you can do in life. The madness will overwhelm you. Resistance is futile. Embrace the madness, people! Be like Ryan!
I also love Nicole Kidman. Once upon a time, I loved her. And once upon another time, I didn't love her. Now, upon this time, I love her. I love her cute little pregnant belly. I even love her million cheesy diamond necklaces, draped across her neck in a defiantly askew fashion.
I love James McAvoy, for being cute and for never appearing to take things too seriously, and for being Mr. Tumnus. I love George Clooney, because he could be just about the most self-satisfied person ever, but he isn't. Also, he's hella sexy.
I still love Keri Russell for being Felicity.
I also love the Brothers Coen, but I must ask if they really need 3 Oscars in one night. The voters probably would've given them a fourth, but I don't think all of them realized that Roderick Jaynes is actually a pseudonym. We get it. The movie was good. I'm sure it is, even though I haven't seen it yet. But should they share the love a little?
Come on, Oscar voters. I have enough love to go around. Why can't you?
